Project Description
The project consists of the complete replacement of the Independence Boulevard Bridge over Brandywine Creek (Big Creek) in Parma Heights, Ohio. A bridge type study was performed by Euthenics to determine the most economical replacement structure while also considering constructability and environmental, utility and right-of-way impacts. A 62 foot long single-span precast/prestressed concrete box beam superstructure with a composite reinforced concrete deck and semi-integral abutments founded on drilled shafts was selected as the replacement structure type. New abutments will be installed behind the footprint of the existing abutments which will allow the contractor to use the existing abutments as cofferdams, work above the Ordinary High Water Mark Elevation, and avoid the need for a waterway permit. The selectively demolished existing abutments will be used as permanent scour protection. The existing roadway width will be maintained and the sidewalk widths increased to better facilitate pedestrian traffic to the adjacent Valley Forge High School. Euthenics worked with the City to secure a funding grant through ODOT's Municipal Bridge Program. This grant will provide funding for 95% of the construction engineering and construction costs.
