Project Description

Euthenics provided engineering and survey services necessary to complete the detailed design of a new bridge carrying U.S. Route 21 over I-77 (Willow Freeway) for ODOT District 12. Due to the heavy skew and vertical curve, some unique engineering solutions were incorporated into the design. A 3-dimensional finite element analysis was performed to optimize the steel girder design. With revised geometry, a single-span bridge was determined to be the preferred option to replace the 405 feet long, four-span structure. The plate girders are 8 feet deep and span 215 feet. The ends of the bridge are flared and the deck is superelevated to match the road geometry. The approaches have compressible soil and Geofoam lightweight fill was used behind the abutments to reduce the overburden pressure. Traffic was maintained on the existing bridge while the new bridge was constructed and only a short closure was required when shifting traffic.
